This is a section of another ram mount I designed used to break the bead of a CAT 797 tire. My priority was to focus on the 90 degree elbow of the ram mount as an area of high stress concentration.
By increasing the second moment of area while maintaining within weight constraints, I was able to achieve a safety factor of 2.0 under expected loads.
I used SolidWorks Simulation to optimize my design, where I found that increasing the bend radius, adding fillets and additional side wall supports significantly lowered the stress plot.
Lastly, I also spent time researching and sourcing ultra-high-strength steels to meet yield strength requirements.
Additionally, I designed a jig for testing the ram mount. The jig simulates the area of a CAT 797 haul truck that the ram mount is mounted to. It was designed to withstand a force of 76608 lbf with a safety factor of 1.5.
