Ram mounts make haul truck tire changes safer and more efficient as they securely hold the ram in place when breaking the tire bead. I designed the ram mount with a pivoting feature to reduce side loading the ram by 23%. The ram is able to pivot at the base of the mount to compensate for some side loading as the piston rods maintain alignment with the cylinder as the ram is driven.
A 3D scan was performed on the rear of a Komatsu 930E hual truck and converted to a mesh body using Skanect 3D. This was used to design and model the ram mount in SolidWorks.
I performed FEA on the ram mount using SolidWorks Simulation to optimize my design. With a ram load of 35 tons, I was able to achieve a safety factor of 2.0
